Greater Manchester Passenger Transport Executive (GMPTE) is scheduled to commence construction of a new Transport Interchange on Smith Street, in autumn 2010. The building will replace the outdated bus station in the town centre and will be adjacent to the proposed Rochdale town centre stop for the new Metrolink extension. The new interchange will provide improved passenger facilities and electronic passenger information displays. The site was cleared and remediated in 2008 using funding of £1.5 million through the Single Regeneration Budget. The demolition of the existing bus station along with the existing Municipal Offices will clear the space needed for the proposed new multi-million pound retail and leisure development.
